You’re Not Stuck—You’re Just Operating at a Level Your Brain Was Never Trained For

There’s a moment that happens to a lot of high-performing women, and it’s confusing when you’re in it because nothing looks wrong from the outside. The business is solid. The closings are consistent. You’ve built something that works. And yet, there’s this quiet thought that keeps showing up—“I should be further than this.” Not in a pressure-filled way, but in a knowing. Like there’s another level available to you, and no matter how much you push, strategize, or try to outwork it… you can’t quite break through.
I had a conversation with another agent not long ago that brought this into full focus. She looked at me and said, “I don’t even know how to list commercial property.” And I just smiled, because I’ve been there. I remember when commercial felt like a completely different world—different language, different expectations, different everything. And if I would have sat there waiting until I “knew how,” I never would have started. That’s the trap.
We think we need to understand something fully before we step into it. But the truth is, we learn because we step into it.
Think about it—we all start out not knowing how to walk or talk. No one hands us a manual. We don’t sit around analyzing whether we’re ready. We try, we fall, we adjust, and we try again until it becomes natural. Everything in life starts with a first. And somewhere along the way, as adults, especially as high achievers, we forget that. We start believing that not knowing is a problem instead of the starting point.
What I’ve learned, both in real estate and in coaching, is that the shift happens when I stop making “not knowing” mean I’m not ready. When I trust myself enough to believe that everything is figureoutable, that I will keep trying until I get it, something changes. I don’t need all the answers anymore. I just need a willingness to begin. And when I have that, all I know how to do is start.
Because here’s the deeper truth—your brain isn’t the boss of you. It’s an operating system. And most of us are running programs that were never designed for growth at higher levels. It tells you to hesitate, to question, to stay where it’s safe and familiar. But you get to decide what gets installed. You get to choose thoughts that move you forward instead of hold you back. Your brain comes along for the ride. It learns through action, not before it.
So if you feel like you’re stuck, you’re not. You’re just standing at the edge of something new without a roadmap yet. And that’s not a sign to stop—it’s a sign to go. Because every level you’ve already reached in your life started the same exact way. With a first step you weren’t fully ready for… but took anyway.
